Adopt a Shore’s semi-annual Norris Lake cleanup a huge success
JAMESTOWN, TENN. – The Adopt A Shore all-volunteer community clean-up effort benefiting Norris Lake hosted another successful semiannual campaign..
The two-day event was sponsored by UPS and Anheuser-Busch, both located in Knoxville.
Other area businesses that participated were Norrislakeinfo.com and the lake’s only community with three completed marinas, The Willows Communities. The Community donated a pontoon boat and fuel, which allowed volunteers to reach debris and rubbish that was out-of-reach from the shoreline. Coupled with clean-up efforts from the volunteers working along the shore, the pontoon boat provided access to a greater amount of refuse.
“Our volunteers are making a tremendous difference this year and it really shows. We have to travel farther and farther to get the trash.
“We appreciated all of the support from our sponsors, especially The Willows - the only marina to help us - and we continue to ask everyone to help us in keeping Norris Lake clean,” commented Lee Stevens, community leader and co-founder of Adopt a Shore.
Nearly 20 volunteers pulled numerous bagfuls of trash, including mattresses, tires, plastic building posts and Styrofoam from Norris Lake.
Each year the organization holds Spring and Fall cleanup drives which are manned entirely by volunteers.
“Having one of the cleanest lakes in Tennessee is important to our tourism industry and is very valuable to The Willows Communities, our homeowners and the patrons of our three marinas. Organizations like Adopt a Shore are the reason Norris Lake is one of Tennessee’s most pristine natural treasures. We are extremely proud to be their long-term partner,” said The Willows Communities Project Director Bob McCombs.
With the support of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Adopt a Shore has expanded from a pilot program hosting Spring and Fall clean-up campaigns into a multi-lake initiative.
Following the cleanup, participants enjoyed a cookout complete with several prize drawings.
